WRC 9 The Official Game is a better rally game than we deserve on Nintendo Switch. There’s a comprehensive tutorial to take new players through this aspect of the game. WRC 9 also allows players to manage the team, select events, staff, and upgrading the cars. The game also has a training option that allows players to get used to the mechanics of rally driving across the different road surfaces.ĭriving cars is only part of the game. The test area allows players to select any car and take it for a spin. As well as the career mode, whereby players take their drive from the junior level to the actual WRC, there are single events, straight seasons, and challenges that can also be selected. Whilst I can usually traverse an unfamiliar rally stage without too big a problem, on the Switch I really needed to learn the route to avoid hitting the barriers or ending up in a ditch. This makes it difficult to decern which way I was going, especially when my co-driver’s directions seemed to run away with themselves. Whilst graphics aren’t everything, I found the visuals to sometimes be a little too muddy, especially in low light. The environments suffer the most and you can see the compromises that the developers had to make. Whilst the graphics are passable on the Switch’s small screen as a portable experience, on a large TV they look almost at a PlayStation 2 level of fidelity. I’d not say that WRC 9 is a bad-looking game on the Switch, but it has been toned down from its PC/console counterparts. Players do get plenty of vibration feedback through the Joycons, though! Nintendo’s puzzling omission of analogue triggers for the Switch makes careful, controlled acceleration and braking impossible. So that’s everything from a state-of-the-art Ford Fiesta WRC to a Ford Escort Mk II RS1800.Ĭar handling is superb, although handicapped due to the limitations of the Switch controllers. The game allows players to drive cars from the WRC, WRC 2, WRC 3, and Junior WRC, as well as legendary WRC cars from the rally championship’s venerable history. They’ve made the 2020 WRC something that you can take with you. The Switch version features everything that you’d find in the PC, Xbox, and PlayStation versions of the game. That’s over 50 teams competing in over 100 stages across 14 countries, including New Zealand. WRC 6 The Official Game puts the entirety of the 2020 World Rally Championship literally in your hands. For an outfit seemingly more about the racing than the visuals, it’s pretty reasonable for them to adapt their WRC series for the Nintendo Switch. Whilst not as polished as the likes of the Codemasters Dirt Rally games, I could never fault them on the car physics. I’ve long admired KT Racing and their WRC games. Coming in 2021 there is also the WRC eSports League once again.KT Racing takes this year’s official World Rally Championship game, WRC 9, and squeezes it into the Nintendo Switch. Occasionally there will also be a Special Challenge with a real-life prize such as a watch or something extra. There are daily and weekly events where you can earn points based on leaderboard position too. There are 50 challenges in total and range from Extreme Condition races, where you need to get as far as possible, to Maintenance challenges – in these you can only repair certain parts of the car before then taking it out for a spin.Įven in Multiplayer, you are presented with several options, letting you create or join lobbies where players can form their own rulesets or rallies, or you may choose to compete in an Online Event. The better your performance, the more points you are awarded, and these then collect to unlock more challenges. Another personal favourite was Challenge mode that gives you short and sharp races with three objectives to complete. There is always this element of the unknown when approaching a corner will the car turn as anticipated or will there be too much understeer? This seems to happen more when on gravel or asphalt, less so when on slippier surfaces such as snow or dirt.Īway from Career mode, there are plenty of other options to choose from. Handling has been improved on the cars in general, but still feels a bit hit and miss. I would have expected morale to be at an all-time high when earning a promotion, likewise when sticking with the same manufacturer through divisions too. However, when taking on new contracts in higher WRC divisions, morale and relationships seem to reset.
